Sateri, a member of the RGE group of companies, capped off 2018 with a succession of milestones that put it on track with its sustainability goals. Already the largest viscose producer in China with three mills and an annual capacity in excess of 800,000 tonnes, Sateri is embarking on a major expansion to become the world’s biggest producer by 2020.
Completing the Higg Facility Environmental Assessment for Responsible Manufacturing
All three of Sateri’s mills in China have completed the Higg Facility Environmental Assessment for Responsible Manufacturing. The mills achieved scores of above 80%, which were verified on-site by third party assessors approved by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC).
The Higg Index is a suite of tools developed by the SAC to enable brands, retailers, and facilities of all sizes to accurately measure and score a company or product’s sustainability performance. The Facility Environmental Assessment Module (FEM) of the Higg Index holistically assesses facilities’ environmental and social performance across many key areas such as management system, energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, water use, waste management, chemical management, and working conditions. The results from the assessment help business owners make improvements in reducing the negative impacts of the operations.
This achievement marks another milestone in Sateri’s sustainability journey, which already includes being a founding member of the Collaboration for the Sustainable Development of Viscose (CV), which aims to improve quality and production standards across the industry.

Continuous Improvement in Transparency and Accountability
Committed to best practices and accountability in its work, Sateri aims to provide honest, open and transparent disclosure to its stakeholders. It earned the honours of being the first viscose producer in the world to clinch the prestigious GoldenBee Excellent CSR Report Award for its 2017 Sustainability Report.
Conferred to only 80 of 1,580 entries, the GoldenBee Excellent CSR Report Award recognises the exemplary efforts and progress Sateri has made in sustainability reporting, which include appointing an independent third party to audit its report.
Sateri Chief Operating Officer Allen Zhang said Sateri was proud to have received the award and added, “Sateri believes that sustainability reporting not only demonstrates transparency and accountability but also acts as a management tool to guide companies in identifying areas for improvement.”
