Building the World’s First Net Zero LNG Facility

Woodfibre LNG is making progress with construction of what will be the world’s first net zero LNG export facility.

The project kicked off in August 2023, and in the 18 months since, has made significant strides. Uniquely, Sķwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) serves as a regulator on the project, providing meaningful feedback while ensuring we honour the land upon which we operate.

Firming up the foundations

On the south side of the upcoming LNG export site, new riprap—a layer of stone or boulders—was placed along the shore to protect against erosion. A new “floatel,” which arrived in June 2024, has also been introduced to provide accommodation for the project’s workforce of over 650 workers. In August 2024, the first foundations of concrete work were installed, paving the way for further construction on top in 2025.

At the north end of the site, the shoreline was improved with over 110 marine piles to support mooring, as well as ship-loading and floating storage facilities. In 2025, the project will further encompass the construction of a liquefaction train, a floating LNG storage, an offloading unit, an air-cooling system, and marine docking facilities for LNG carriers.

Part of the community

Located in Squamish, British Columbia, the project follows rigorous environmental safeguards, including a marine mammal monitoring programme, which ensures construction work is conducted while protecting the marine inhabitants of Howe Sound. Woodfibre LNG has also invested more than $3 million into community initiatives, supporting local non-profit programmes, events, and organisations, particularly those for youth and elders.

In May 2024, Woodfibre LNG launched its Gender and Cultural Safety Management Plan, the first of its kind in the Canadian resource industry. This committee, made up of indigenous and non-indigenous women of the Squamish community, provides counsel and direction on promoting gender safety and policies within the workplace.

With a solid foundation and robust policies in place, the Woodfibre LNG facility is gradually taking shape. In 2025 and beyond, the project is poised to achieve further milestones and continued progress toward the completion of the world’s first net zero LNG export facility.
